Desiree Armfeldt, an actress, is having an affair with Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm who is married to Countess Charlotte Malcolm. Fredrik Egerman, a lover from Desiree's past, is married to the young and virginal Anne. Henrik Egerman, Fredrik's son and a divinity student, is in love with his stepmother Anne. The romantic comedy of errors and intrigue features such characters as Anne’s saucy maid Petra, Desiree's worldly wise mother Madame Armfeldt, and Desiree's daughter, Fredrika, through whose eyes we see so much of the story.
